I
The Dallas
Arboretum would like to thank you for inquiring about our Tree
Honorarium Program. The following is a list of frequently asked
questions.
Can I pick any tree in the Dallas Arboretum for a tree
honorarium?
Specific trees within the gardens have been designated for tree
honorariums. Some trees are not available since they are priceless and
irreplaceable. However, there are many beautiful varieties of trees
available. An Arboretum staff person will personally tour the gardens
with you to select the perfect tree.
What if the tree dies after I designate it for an honorarium?
The endowment amount guarantees that your tree will be replaced should
an unforeseen natural disaster occur (for example, a tornado) or if the
tree fails to thrive within a two-year period of purchase.
Each tree is placed within the garden as an integral part of that
garden’s design. The Dallas Arboretum reserves the right to evaluate the
site of the tree.
Will the Arboretum replace the tree with the same kind of tree
as before?
If the tree is replaced, the Arboretum will make every effort to acquire
the same variety and size as was originally purchased by you. If that is
not possible, we reserve the right to substitute another variety or
size. We will, however, replace the tree label with your personal
message should we change the tree.
How are trees marked?
The Arboretum has a standardized labeling system throughout the gardens.
The label used for trees measures 3” by 5” and is made of black metal
with silver lettering. It stands on a black metal stake. Labels are
placed in the ground in front of the tree and are quite handsome. A
temporary, laminated label is placed in front of the tree to mark it
while the permanent label is being made.
What can I put on the tree label?
The label has a maximum of four lines of type. The first two lines are
reserved for botanical information: botanical name of tree and common
name. The bottom portion of the label is reserved for your message and
is subject to approval by the Arboretum. These two lines can accommodate
approximately 87 characters, including spaces and punctuation. We
recommend wording such as, “In tribute to …”, “In honor of…”, “On the
birth of …”, etc. We do not use “In memory of” but rather “In the name
of” a deceased person.
What is the contribution for a tree honorarium?
There are three levels of contributing to a tree
honorarium. The highest level, at $25,000, endows your honorarium for
life. At the $5,000 and $3,000 levels, your honorarium is endowed for
the life of the tree or 10 years (whichever occurs first) and the exact
amount is determined by location.
Can other family members or friends be notified of a tree
honorarium?
Yes, a personal letter can be sent to up to four (4) individuals. Each
letter includes specific information about the tree and a map to help
locate it on their next visit.
Who do I need to speak with or direct endowment funds to at the
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Society?
Linda Partain handles and records all tree honorariums. She can be
reached by calling 214-515-6640.
The Arboretum gives extraordinary care to its trees: pruning,
fertilizing and watering are regularly scheduled for the tree’s optimum
health. Our horticulturists are well trained and watch over each plant
with the eye of a professional. If you choose a living honorarium, there
is no better place to give it life than the Dallas Arboretum. |
