Creative Arts Classes

Creative Arts classes at the Dallas Arboretum give you an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a number of fun and inspired classes.

Using the garden for inspiration, these classes let you expand your creative skills and bring out your imaginative side. Registration for fall 2014 classes is now open. Fused Art Glass Classes Click for More

This fall we have several glass classes that will whet your appetite for this versatile and magical medium. All fused glass pieces will be fired off site and then returned to the Arboretum for pick-up. These classes fill quickly so register today.


Glass Vase/ Candleholder

Using assorted pieces of colorful glass you will use various techniques and materials to create a flat blank which will then be fused and slumped into a beautiful floral shaped vessel that can be uses as a vase or a candleholder.


Art Glass Sushi Plate

Imagine serving guests on a versatile handmade sushi plate that you created! Starting with pre-cut blanks, glass shapes and assorted pieces, you will artfully create a 10” x 10” square plate.

In this fun workshop, you will learn to loosen your approach to the floral still life and work from a transparent background to make your flower paintings look authentic and beautiful. Instructor: Leta Durrett, Mosaic Artist

Make use of wonderful translucent and transparent qualities of glass in these unique project-specific classes. In each workshop, you will learn about cutting, scoring, breaking and setting glass mosaics as well as techniques for working with glass-on-glass and three-dimensional objects. On November 8, you will create a beautiful mosaic lamp that will glitter with reflection and refraction of light. On December 6, explore mosaics and collage as you create a one-of-a-kind 12”x12” holiday inspired mirror. This fun mixed media project will add a little glitz and glamour to your holiday!

Cooler weather is coming and what better way to celebrate than with a handmade scarf that you can wear all winter long. Using pre-warped looms, Emily will help students create a one-of-a-kind wearable art piece using a variety of colorful fibers. No prior knowledge of weaving is necessary.

Pastel painting is a great medium for beginning artists to explore and achieve wonderful results. Karen will introduce you to the basics of pastels and takes you from beginning sketch to final pastel painting while as you learn about materials, form and color blending. Transform a piece of nature into a stunning silk scarf using leaves from the garden. Suzanne will walk you through the process of eco-printing as you experiment with various bark, leaves and flowers. You will also make sample prints on paper to begin your eco-color library.
