Paying with a Donor-Advised Fund, Private Foundation, or IRA?
The Dallas Arboretum welcomes charitable gifts from donor-advised funds (DAFs), private foundations, and qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from individual retirement accounts (IRAs). IRS regulations prohibit these charitable funds from being used to provide or pay for goods or services received in exchange for a contribution, including memberships or other benefits that carry a Fair Market Value (FMV).
If you wish to receive membership benefits or any other goods or services in connection with your gift, the associated FMV must be paid separately to the Arboretum by credit card, check, or another personal, non-charitable payment method. Charitable funds from a DAF, private foundation, or IRA may only be used for the fully tax-deductible charitable portion of a contribution and may not be used to satisfy the non-deductible value of benefits (FMV) of benefits received.
For membership gifts, please refer to the Arboretum’s FMV schedule to determine the non-deductible portion associated with your membership benefits. That amount must be paid separately to the Arboretum by a personal payment method. Only the remaining charitable portion of the contribution may be made through a donor-advised fund, private foundation, or qualified charitable distribution from an IRA.
Following these IRS regulations reflects the Arboretum’s commitment to sound governance, ethical stewardship, and nonprofit best practices. These standards are supported by the Arboretum’s Board of Directors and independent auditors as part of its ongoing commitment to integrity and accountability.
Should you have any questions, please contact Jeremy Rodriguez, Director, Development Operations, at Jeremy.Rodriguez@dallasarboretum.org or (214) 515-6549.
Thank you for your philanthropic support of the Dallas Arboretum.
